REVOLUTION NOT EVOLUTION – NEW STRUCTURE IN GREENFIELD APPROACH

The energy sector is reinventing itself: In order to respond to the changed conditions in the energy market for the long-term, classic energy suppliers need to transform themselves and become providers of energy and infrastructure services. BKW adapted its strategy early on and created the economic conditions to internationally invest in new, energy-related business fields such as infrastructure planning, flood protection, tunnel and bridge construction.

For this purpose, in addition to fundamental organizational changes, the transformation of the management information systems (MIS) for the control of the company was important. The existing SAP ERP system, which is an important base for the MIS, had become aged, and was no longer coping structurally and procedurally with the new great challenges. Adapting the systems (Brownfield approach) was not really viable, and after a brief pre-study phase, the company decided on a new structure according to the Greenfield approach. In cooperation with Q_PERIOR, BKW was the first Swiss company to successfully build a future-oriented finance and logistics system on the basis of S/4HANA Enterprise Management. The system foundation was created with the innovative platform, to realign the company and to guide it into the future.

Our approach

In cooperation with other service providers, Q_PERIOR was first commissioned to perform a pre-analysis of the actual situation, the evaluation of the appropriate software and the determination of the best suitable implementation approach. In the second step, Q_PERIOR supported the implementation of the selected integrated ERP, budget, consolidation and reporting systems based on SAP (S/4HANA Enterprise Management).

The procedure in bullet points

  • Analysis of the existing finance and logistics processes as well as the system architecture and proposal for the future system

  • Decision to go for a “Greenfield” approach in two short, six month long phases (first planning and budgeting processes and in a second phase, logistics and finance processes)

  • Creation of a functional and technical design (detailed concepts)

  • Implementation of the planning and budgeting processes based on BPC optimized for S/4HANA as well as consolidation with SEM BCS on BWonHANA

  • Implementation of the operational report based on S/4HANA embedded BW
  • Redesign of all financial, controlling, purchasing, sales and service processes, according to SAP Best Practices and implementation on S/4HANA Enterprise Management
  • Introduction of SAP SRM and linking to the new S/4HANA landscape
